There's an old story Jesus told...
...that a lot of people know part of, but not all of it. Maybe it rings a bell.A son asked his father to go ahead and give him his inheritance. It was an insulting request, as if his dad was as good as dead. He took the money, went to a far country, and blew it all. When famine hit, he found himself working for a pig farmer. And the pigs ate better than he did. He thought of home.He said to himself, “How many of my father’s servants have plenty of bread to eat, and I have none? I’ll return home and maybe he will have me for a servant since I am no longer worthy to be a son.”He arose and returned home.But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’But the father said to his servants, “Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” And they began to be merry.
How Lost Sons Come Home
We’ve all sinned and gone astray. We’ve all rebelled against God. We’ve all been lost.But Jesus made a way for all lost sons to come home.He lived a perfect life—the life you should have lived.He died in your place, paying the due penalty for your sins.He rose from the dead so that you could be raised to everlasting life with Him, victorious over Satan, sin, and death.The way lost sons come home is by trusting Jesus with loyal faith.What does that mean?It means you turn from your sins, confessing them to God. It means you believe Jesus is God’s Son, and that He died and rose again for the forgiveness of your sins. It means you confess there is no other way to be right with God than through Jesus.Trusting Jesus isn’t just believing a fact. It’s the kind of trust that starts obeying Him the way a man swears loyalty to a king.When you trust Jesus with loyal faith, God the Father welcomes you as a son forever.Come home to Christ.
An Invitation
Friend,My name is Rhett and I've been the pastor at FBC Travelers Rest for four years. I don't know your story (yet). But I have a guess: you grew up around church, drifted away, and lately something's been drawing you back. Maybe it’s the craziness of the world we live in. Maybe it’s because you have kids now. Maybe you just sense a need for stability.I want to invite you to First Baptist Church of Travelers Rest. A lot of people find the rootedness they’re looking for here. We are a traditional Baptist church. We sing old hymns. We have fried chicken at our pot-lucks. I preach the Bible straight up. The Bible might step on your toes a little bit, but know it stepped on mine first.More than anything, we love Jesus at First Baptist. If you come, we’ll help you know, love, and follow Jesus. That’s our priority.I wear a coat and tie, but you don’t have to (most don’t). We have a Sunday School class for your kids, but if you only come to worship, you don’t have to worry about dropping them off with someone you don’t know. Our kids worship with us, and we don’t mind if they make a little noise (in fact, we kind of like it). Our services typically last about an hour.I’ll be at the front door this coming Sunday morning before and after the service. I’d love to shake your hand and introduce myself to you.
